The start of summer has officially arrived and we are so excited. My son’s birthday was this weekend and we celebrated with a trip to Disney. We stayed at the Polynesian and it was magical. Our first week of summer the kids will be attending a fun Bible Camp in the mornings so we don’t have too much planned to do this week. I do want to include a lot of educational activities to keep their reading levels up as last summer I think that when they returned to school they really did lose a lot over the summer.
Here are a few of the fun summer projects I found to try out:
The Water Blob – looks like a lot of fun, I almost don’t believe it will work so I look forward to trying this one.
Growing up one of my favorite summer activities was collecting lightning bugs. Unfortunately in South Florida we do not have those, just giant mosquitoes, not as much fun. We are going to plant a butterfly garden and include a number of butterfly friendly plants. This will go along with our vegetables we all picked to plant as well. In an effort to encourage a genuine affection for eating vegetables I had the kids each pick one vegetable they want to grow and we bought the seeds and will take care of the garden. It will be a little challenging with the heat but hopefully we can make our own salad from our garden one day.
We also have a few life skills that the kids are not 100% confident in like tying shoes, counting money and telling time. We will incorporate those into our days too.
We will need to invite the neighbors and hope they are willing to try some old school outdoor games like kickball and flashlight tag! I used to love a variety of Kick the Can we used to play growing up so that one is at the top of our list. Coffee Cups and Crayons has a great Old School Summer Bucket List with a lot of great inspiration too!
Reading was one of my favorite summer pastimes. My mom would take me to the book store at the start of the summer and I would get a stack of new books, I remember the thrill of a brand new stack of Sweet Valley High just waiting to be read 😉 We will be heading to the library and stocking up our own home library.
